TINA B. BY THE WATER

Curated by TINA B.

Does TINA B. like water? She certainly does. The theme of water as one of the basic elements of nature is well in tune with the basic idea behind the sixth annual TINA B. Contemporary Art Festival 2011 and its theme 2011 ART – ECO – BIO. Moreover, TINA B., as a native of Prague, loves the Vltava River, so it comes as no surprise that the section she has curated for the festival is in its immediate proximity, on the river quay below Rašín Embankment. This location is regarded by many as one of the most romantic parts of Prague.

At (A)void Gallery on the quay the festival section called TINA B. BY THE WATER will present visitors with work by several artists from around the world. This new gallery below Rašín Embankment in Prague 2 is this year only beginning its second season. (A)void Gallery is primarily devoted to the cultural and social revival of public spaces in Prague 2.

TINA B. invites visitors to come see Barnstormer, the name of a work by the American artist Kal Spelletich that involves a large, three-metre metal construction with wings that moves like an angel. Interestingly, its author created it out of things collected and then recycled into a work of art.

The environment is also the theme of a work by the Zimbabwe-born artist Dan Halter, who at TINA B. will be exhibiting his unorthodox refugee map of the world titled Rifugiato Mappadel Mondo, composed out of new and used plastic bags.

By contrast, all-natural materials are used in the art of the young Slovak artist Lukas Grohman. His almost three-metre-long Sarcophagus – Return to the Wilderness is his graduation work, completion of which was preceded by many trips into nature and a search for the materials suited to the realisation of his ideas.

Natural materials are also used in the work of the artist Fiorella Bologna, who was born in the Italian province of Liguria. In the section TINA B. BY THE WATER Bologna will present her installation called Sacrum, made of water, earth, seeds, gravel, and other materials.

A watercolour on paper titled Action 9 – Landscape Appropriation 9 by the Mexican artists Anabel Quirarte and Jorge Ornelas shows the interesting links between the human body and the landscape around it.

The artist Svetlana Ostapovici of Moldova, in her photographic work titled Metal Recycling, focuses on the issue of the negative impact of industrial production on the nature around us.

TINA B. BY THE WATER is a section that touches on environmental problems and looks at them from different perspectives. This section of TINA B. 2011 will draw visitors to the quay below Rašín Embankment so that they can enjoy the experience of viewing art while the magical Vltava River flows by.
