ECO BIO GOES AROUND THE WORLD

Curated by TINA B.

The 2011 TINA B. Contemporary Art Festival’s theme is ART – ECO – BIO. Not just environmental activists, but even artists around the world are beginning to devote attention to the problems brought about by humanity’s careless treatment of nature. ECO BIO GOES AROUND THE WORLD is the name of one section of the festival that will take viewers on a tour through ‘green’ art by artists from around the world – e.g. Japan, Israel, Canada, and Spain. TINA B., the festival’s mysterious patroness, has placed the videos and installations that make up ECO BIO GOES AROUND THE WORLD in the unusual space of the Fallout Shelter beneath Hotel Jalta at Wenceslas Square 45, right in the centre of Prague.

The secret nuclear fallout shelter located on the second underground level of Hotel Jalta is perfect for an exhibition of environmental art. TINA B. is basically recycling this space, as it was excluded from the civil defence network of nuclear fallout shelters back in 1997. The history of this space down in the depths beneath Wenceslas Square is very interesting. The second underground level of Hotel Jalta was designed as a major nuclear fallout shelter for 30 actively employed people and a further 250 people who required shelter. It was supposed to be capable of withstanding the explosion of nuclear weapons and aerial bombs. It was equipped with a power generation, a special water tank, and a small hospital that, alongside an operating room, also included rooms for administering electric shock or putting on casts, a room for patients confined to bed, a room for people subjected to poison gas, and a room for staff to rest in.

The unusual juxtaposition of art and massive concrete walls intended to prevent the spread of radioactivity has attracted artists from around the world. One figure who will be showing work as part of ECO BIO GOES AROUND THE WORLD is the artist Shalom Tomas Neuman, who was born in Prague. He was the only male descendant of a large Jewish family to survive the Holocaust. He spent his childhood in Israel, and since age 12 has lived in the United States. Neuman is returning to his native Prague with a colourful light installation called Neo Nuky Madona.

However, many other artists will be showing work in the Fallout Shelter beneath Hotel Jalta as part of ECO BIO GOES AROUND THE WORLD; Spain, for instance, is represented here by the painter Lluis Barba, who will be showing his art video at TINA B. 2011. It is also necessary to mention the Italian artist Franco Angeloni, who is no newcomer to the TINA B. Festival, and this year is dropping by with his light installation Neon Head. The contemporary Austrian art scene is represented this year at TINA B. by the artistic duo Ruth Anderwald and Leonhard Grond, who will be showing their video titled Freedom Is Fragments in the Fallout Shelter. Visitors to ECO BIO GOES AROUND THE WORLD will also have a chance to see Czech art, specifically The Zoo by Ondřej Tuček.

ECO BIO GOES AROUND THE WORLD
will present visitors with artists’ various perspectives on environmental issues. TINA B. 2011 gave the artists the opportunity to express themselves on this very hot topic through their art. It is up to us whether we take away anything from their message.
